Reasons and Solutions for Door Drafts

One of the most common - and costly - door problems that requires repair is when it begins letting in drafts. This can result in higher energy bills, as the homeowner is forced to rely more on their air conditioner or furnace to keep the home at a comfortable temperature.

This is generally caused by worn out weatherstripping, which is fortunately a relatively easy and cost-effective repair. There are several types of weatherstripping, and some are more effective than others. Open-cell foams and felt are inexpensive and easy to apply, but aren't considered as effective at blocking airflow as vinyl and metal weatherstripping.

Other reasons for a drafty door might include problems with one of the door's hinges or the door jamb itself. If traditional weatherstripping methods cannot be made to work, it's probably best to consider replacing the door altogether.
